1. The First Flight of the de Havilland Canada DHC2 Beaver Prototype: A Pioneering Moment in Aviation History The captivating image before you showcases a pivotal moment in aviation history: the first prototype of the de Havilland Canada DHC2 Beaver, CF-FHB-X, taking to the skies for the very first time. This historic aircraft, fitted with a ski undercarriage, is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation that characterized the early days of aviation. The de Havilland Canada DHC2 Beaver, a versatile and iconic bush plane, was designed and manufactured by de Havilland Canada, a subsidiary of the British de Havilland Aircraft Company. The Beaver was initially conceived in response to a requirement from the Canadian government for a rugged, short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft capable of operating in the challenging environments of Canada's vast wilderness. CF-FHB-X, the first prototype, made its maiden flight on March 5, 1947, piloted by de Havilland test pilot John C. Peterson. The ski undercarriage, an essential feature for operating in snow and ice, was a significant departure from the conventional wheeled undercarriage commonly used on contemporary aircraft. The Beaver's ability to take off and land on unimproved surfaces, combined with its robust design and impressive payload capacity, quickly established it as a favorite among bush pilots and remote communities. This photograph, a precious record of aviation history, captures the spirit of adventure and pioneering determination that defined the early days of Canadian aviation. The de Havilland Canada DHC2 Beaver would go on to become a legendary aircraft, serving in various roles, including search and rescue, scientific research, and even as aerial photography platforms. The legacy of the Beaver continues to inspire and influence aviation design to this day.
