EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1910, we witness a moment of respite during military manoeuvres of the Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) in the picturesque town of Rustenburg, situated in the North-West Province of South Africa. The tranquil scene is a stark contrast to the military drills and training exercises that would have taken place in the surrounding fields and camps. The image captures a group of RHA soldiers, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, gathered around a makeshift altar set up on the back of a wagon. A clergyman stands proudly atop the wagon, delivering a sermon to the attentive soldiers below. The setting sun casts a warm glow over the scene, with the grassy field stretching out behind them, dotted with tents and horses. The North-West Province, formerly known as the Transvaal, was a British colonial territory at the time, and the presence of the RHA was a reminder of the British colonial rule in the region. The soldiers, with their horses, represented the might and power of the British military, which was instrumental in maintaining order and control in the colonial territories. Despite the military context, the image portrays a sense of community and spirituality, with the soldiers taking a break from their duties to attend the church service. The photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers during the 1910s, providing a fascinating insight into the intersection of colonialism, military life, and religion in South Africa during this period.
