EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite woodblock print, titled "The Red Snapper's Dream: Ebisu Using an Abacus," dates back to 1805 and offers a captivating glimpse into Japanese mythology and folklore. The image features a vibrant red snapper, its scales glistening, nestled comfortably in a woven basket. The fish appears to be in a tranquil slumber, its eyes closed in peaceful contentment. Above the basket, the god Ebisu, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan, is depicted using an abacus. Ebisu is easily identified by his distinctive red face, which is said to represent the color of the auspicious sunset, and his fishing rod, which he holds in his other hand. Ebisu is the patron deity of fishermen and is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity to those who honor him. In this dream sequence, the red snapper is likely seeking the blessings of Ebisu, hoping for a bountiful catch and a prosperous fishing season. The intricate details of the print, from the delicate patterns on the fish's scales to the intricately designed abacus, showcase the masterful artistry of the woodblock printmakers of the time.
