EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the English Raymond F.17 radio receiver, a technological marvel of its time, produced in 1947. The Raymond F.17, a five-valve set, was a popular choice among radio enthusiasts during the post-war era. With a price tag of 15 guineas (approximately £16.50 in today's currency), it represented a significant investment for the average household. The historical context of this radio receiver is intriguing. The year 1947 marked the end of World War II and the beginning of the post-war economic recovery. Amidst the austerity and rationing, owning a radio was a luxury that brought families and communities together. The Raymond F.17 provided access to news, entertainment, and education, making it an essential item in many homes. The Raymond F.17's sleek design and compact size were appealing, but its true value lay in its functionality. The five valves (vacuum tubes) amplified the radio signals, allowing clear and crisp sound quality. The set featured multiple bands, including the long wave, medium wave, and short wave, enabling listeners to tune in to various stations from around the world. This photograph is a testament to the fascination and excitement that radio technology held during the late 1940s. It serves as a reminder of a time when radio was the primary source of mass media and communication, and the simple pleasure of tuning in to a favorite station brought joy and connection to millions of people.
