EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Queen Victoria in an extraordinary moment during the historic fancy dress ball held at Buckingham Palace on December 14, 1842. The Queen, known for her love of history and tradition, chose to pay homage to the past by dressing up as Philippa of Hainault, the consort of Edward III, a significant figure in English history. The splendid attire worn by the monarch for this special occasion was nothing short of magnificent. The regal ensemble was adorned with a lining of miniver fur, a rare and expensive import at the time, which added an exquisite touch to her historical costume. Queen Victoria was the only person to wear this luxurious fur lining at the ball, making her outfit even more unique and impressive. The theme of the fancy dress ball was historical costume, providing the perfect opportunity for the Queen to showcase her passion for the rich history of the Plantagenet dynasty. The intricate details of her dress, from the elaborate embroidery to the elegant train, reflect the grandeur and opulence of the royal court during the Middle Ages. This portrait, taken by an unknown photographer, is a testament to Queen Victoria's commitment to preserving history and her dedication to maintaining the grandeur and tradition of the British monarchy. The image, available from Mary Evans Prints Online, is a rare and valuable document of a unique moment in royal history.
