EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts the enigmatic Plesiosaurus, a large marine sauropterygian reptile that roamed the Earth's oceans during the early Jurassic period, approximately 183 million to 166 million years ago. The Plesiosaurus, meaning 'near-swimmer' in Greek, is recognized by its distinctive elongated neck and four flipper-like limbs. This stunning illustration was created by the renowned German artist and book illustrator, Heinrich Harder, in 1916. Harder was known for his exceptional talent in capturing the essence of various animals, both living and extinct, with remarkable accuracy and detail. This particular illustration is taken from his publication "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World," published in Hamburg. The Plesiosaurus is believed to have lived in warm, shallow seas, where it hunted for fish and other marine life using its sharp teeth and powerful limbs. Its elongated neck, which could measure up to two-thirds of its body length, allowed it to maneuver in the water with ease and reach deep into the water to catch its prey. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Plesiosaurus is now an extinct creature, having vanished from the planet long before the first humans appeared. Yet, its legacy lives on through captivating illustrations like this one, which continue to inspire awe and fascination in generations of natural history enthusiasts. Harder's illustration showcases the Plesiosaurus in all its majesty, with its sleek body gliding through the water, its eyes fixed intently on some unseen prey. The vibrant colors and intricate details bring the prehistoric creature to life, transporting us back to a time when such magnificent beings roamed our planet.
