Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. This plate is taken from the seminal work "Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium" (Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname), published between 1766 and 1773 by the renowned naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian. The plate features a detailed illustration of a Common Caiman (Caiman crocodilus), a large prehistoric-looking reptile native to the tropical regions of South and Central America. The Common Caiman, also known as the Guiana Caiman, is a member of the family Alligatoridae within the larger order Crocodylia, which includes alligators, gavialids, and crocodiles. This powerful predator is characterized by its long, powerful tail, elongated snout, and powerful jaws filled with sharp, conical teeth. Merian's meticulous observation and documentation of the Common Caiman's anatomy and behavior were groundbreaking for her time, as she was one of the first European women to study and illustrate tropical animals in their natural habitats. Her work paved the way for future naturalists and zoologists, and her illustrations remain some of the most accurate and detailed records of these animals from the 18th century. This plate, in particular, showcases the Common Caiman in its natural environment, surrounded by aquatic vegetation and with its mouth wide open, revealing its fearsome teeth.
