EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a United States Navy McDonnell F-4J Phantom jet, specifically 153773 (msn 1759, base code AC, call sign 110), of VF-31, is seen making a visit to the USS Nimitz. The F-4J Phantom, a twin-engine, two-seat, all-weather fighter aircraft, was a variant of the F-4 Phantom II, which was widely used by the US Navy and Marine Corps from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. At the time this image was captured, circa 1975, this particular Phantom was assigned to the USS Saratoga, an aircraft carrier of the Forrestal-class. The F-4J Phantom 153773 would later have a remarkable second life when it was allocated to the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the UK, becoming F-4J(UK) ZE351. The RAF received a total of 15 F-4Js, which were assigned to 74 Squadron at RAF Wattisham, which stood up in October 1984. ZE351 served with the RAF until it was withdrawn from use on 11 February 1991. The jet was then transported to the fire training dump at RAF Finningley, where it was given the inventory number 9058M. This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of this aircraft, as it transitioned from its role as a US Navy fighter to a training aircraft for the RAF. The image is a testament to the versatility and longevity of this iconic aviation machine.
