In this historic photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, we see three United States Navy Boeing F4B-1 fighters, identified as A8145 (msn 1125), A8137 (msn 1117), and one unidentified aircraft, lined up on a tarmac. These fighters were part of the United States Navy's fleet during the early 1930s and were used primarily as advanced trainers for naval aviators. The Boeing F4B-1 was a biplane fighter aircraft that entered service with the United States Navy in 1932. It was an advanced design for its time, featuring a retractable landing gear, enclosed cockpit, and a powerful Wright R-1820 engine. The F4B-1 was also the first Navy fighter to be equipped with a radial engine, making it a significant improvement over the earlier F3D biplanes.
