EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a fragment of the renowned East Frieze of the Parthenon, a masterpiece of ancient Greek art that dates back to the 5th century BC. The Parthenon, located in Athens, Greece, is a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, but this section of the frieze depicts a scene from the mythology of Zeus and Hera. Zeus, the king of the gods, is depicted seated on a stool, wearing a draped himation and holding a scepter. His wife, Hera, is also seated next to him, wearing a elegant peplos and holding a distaff and spindle, symbols of her role as the goddess of marriage and childbirth. Between them stands a man, possibly an archon or basileus, who is receiving the folded peplos from a young boy. This scene represents the annual ritual of the Panathenaia festival, where a new peplos was woven for Athena and then presented to her in a grand procession. This fragment is now housed in the British Museum in London, England, where it is preserved for future generations to appreciate the intricate details and historical significance of ancient Greek art. The East Frieze is renowned for its lifelike depictions of humans and gods, and this scene is no exception, showcasing the skill and artistry of the ancient Greek sculptors. The girls in the background, dressed in Ionic chitons and himations, add to the vibrant and dynamic composition of this ancient masterpiece.
