In this powerful photograph from July 1940, we see a woman from the Women's Voluntary Service standing proudly outside their town hall, surrounded by a collection of kitchen utensils. Lord Beaverbrook, the Minister for Aircraft Production during World War II, had made an urgent appeal for objects made of aluminium to aid in the manufacture of aeroplanes for the war effort.
