This evocative photograph captures the historic moment when Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, the renowned French explorer, met with local Congolese leaders during his expedition to Central Africa between 1875 and 1885. Dressed in his European attire, Brazza stands confidently before a group of intrigued and curious native men. In his hand, he holds aloft the tricolor French flag, symbolizing the beginning of French colonial rule in the region. Born in 1852 in Corsica, France, Brazza was an intrepid explorer and diplomat who played a significant role in the European scramble for Africa. He was the first European to establish a French presence in the Congo Basin, predating the more famous expeditions of Henry Morton Stanley and Leopold II. Brazza's approach to exploration was marked by respect for the indigenous peoples and their cultures, which set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
