Peace in 1945 - Honour the Architects of Your Liberty
EDITORS COMMENTS
- This poignant and patriotic card from Belgium pays tribute to the key figures who played pivotal roles in bringing an end to the devastating Second World War in Europe. The inset portraits feature (from left to right, top row) His Majesty Leopold III of Belgium (1901-1983), who ruled Belgium during the war and was in exile during its final years; President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States (1882-1945), who led his country through the war and played a crucial role in the Allied victory; and King George VI of Great Britain (1895-1952) and Queen Elizabeth, who faced the challenges of wartime leadership with resilience and determination. In the second row, we see (from left to right) Prime Minister Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom (1874-1965), whose inspiring speeches and unwavering resolve galvanized the British people and the Allies; President Charles de Gaulle of France (1890-1970), who led the Free French Forces and played a significant role in the liberation of France; and Queen Juliana of the Netherlands (1909-2004) and Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld (1911-2004), who ruled the Netherlands during the war and contributed to the country's post-war reconstruction. The final portrait is of Joseph Stalin (1879-1953), the Soviet Union's leader during the war. While his role in the Allied victory is undeniable, the complexities and controversies of his leadership are well-documented. This image serves as a reminder of the complexities and contradictions of history, and the importance of acknowledging the contributions of all the architects of peace, both heroic and flawed. This image, circa 1945, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Second World War and the importance of honouring those who played a role in securing peace and liberty for future generations.
