EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant image, the R-class destroyer HMS Rowena sails into Dover Harbour on May 14, 1919, bearing the solemn burden of a national heroine. The return of the body of Edith Cavell, a brave and selfless nurse, marks the end of a tragic chapter in the annals of World War I. Edith Cavell, a British nurse, had been executed by the Germans in October 1915 for helping Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium. Her martyrdom had sparked widespread outrage and sympathy across the world, and her memory became a powerful symbol of the heroic spirit and resilience of the Allied forces. As the HMS Rowena approaches the English shore, a guard of honour stands at attention on the deck, their flags at half mast in respect for the fallen heroine. The coffin, draped in the Union Jack and covered in flowers, is carried carefully on board, surrounded by mourners and dignitaries. The scene is one of quiet dignity and solemnity, as the nation comes together to pay tribute to a woman who had given her life in the service of others. The waters of the Channel shimmer in the sunlight, reflecting the sombre mood of the occasion. The crowd on the shore watches in silence as the destroyer sails closer, the sound of the ship's horn echoing through the still air. The return of Edith Cavell's body marks the beginning of her journey home, where she would be laid to rest with full military honours and remembered as a national heroine and a martyr to the cause of freedom and humanity.
