EDITORS COMMENTS
Nestled along the picturesque coastline of Appley, Ryde, on the Isle of Wight in Hampshire, stands a captivating Gothic Revival folly known as Tower by the Beach. This architectural gem was commissioned around 1875 by Sir William Hutt, a local landowner and philanthropist, who sought to enhance the beauty of his estate. The tower, inspired by medieval castle designs, is a circular structure adorned with battlements, a turret, and an external stair. Its most striking features are the intricately designed Gothic Revival tracery windows, which allow the sunlight to filter in, casting beautiful patterns on the interior walls. The oriel window, facing the sea, offers a breathtaking view of the English Channel and the surrounding landscape. Built during the Victorian era, the Tower by the Beach is a testament to the aesthetic sensibilities of the time. It serves as a local landmark, drawing visitors from far and wide who are captivated by its unique charm and historical significance. The tower, standing proudly above the beach, invites one to imagine the stories of the past that unfolded within its walls. A visit to this enchanting folly is a must for anyone seeking a glimpse into the rich history and architectural heritage of the Isle of Wight.
