EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the beautiful and intricately detailed features of Geranium umbellicatum, also known as the Gooseberry Crane's-bill or Bec de Grue ombellique. The botanical illustration was originally created by Mlle. de St. Suire and meticulously rendered in engraving form by Jean Victor Dupin junior for Pierre Joseph Buchoz's Herbier Artificial, published in Paris in 1783. Geranium umbellicatum is a species of crane's-bill, a genus of herbaceous perennial plants in the Geraniaceae family. This particular species is native to Europe and Asia, and is characterized by its distinctive umbellate inflorescence, or cluster of flowers arranged on a central stem. The flowers are typically pink or purple, with five petals and a distinctive white or pink stripe running down the center. The botanical illustration captures the delicate beauty of the Geranium umbellicatum in stunning detail, with each petal, vein, and leaf rendered with precision and artistry. The copperplate engraving process, which involved etching the design onto a copper plate and then printing it onto paper using ink, allowed for the intricacies of the illustration to be faithfully reproduced. This engraving is an important historical artifact, not only for its beautiful depiction of a lesser-known species of geranium, but also for its role in the development of botanical illustration and the advancement of scientific knowledge during the 18th century. The Herbier Artificial, which contained over 1,500 plates of both European and exotic plants, was a groundbreaking work that helped to document and classify the natural world in a new and more accurate way. Today, this engraving serves as a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the natural world, and the importance of preserving and documenting it for future generations.
