EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Scale-throated Hermit, Phaethornis eurynome, also known as the Scaly-backed Hummingbird (Trochilus eurynomus). The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, Volume 2, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1833. The Scale-throated Hermit is a small, delicate hummingbird native to the forests of Central and South America. The male, as depicted in this illustration, is characterized by its iridescent green back, scaly appearance on the nape and upper back, and a white underbelly with a distinctive black spot on the throat. The female, on the other hand, has a more subdued appearance with a greenish-brown back and a white underbelly with a faint grayish tinge. The Scale-throated Hermit is a solitary bird that is rarely seen, making it a prized find for ornithologists and birdwatchers alike. It is known to feed on nectar from flowers, particularly those of the Heliconia plant, and also takes small insects as prey. This intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators of the 19th century. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the image, making it a valuable addition to any natural history collection.
