EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the year 1922, presents an intriguing glimpse into the lives of three Sakai tribesmen from the Malay States in South East Asia. At the time, this region was under the British Empire's rule, and is now a part of modern-day Malaysia. The Sakai people, also known as the Jah Hut or Orang Asli, are an indigenous ethnic group native to the Peninsular Malayan rainforests. In this image, the men are depicted in their traditional attire, fully prepared for a hunting expedition. The eldest man, dressed in a loincloth and adorned with various body tattoos, carries a bow and a quiver full of arrows. The other two men, wearing only waistcloths, each hold a spear and a net. The 1920s, a decade marked by significant cultural and social changes worldwide, offer a stark contrast to the untouched, primal environment of the Sakai tribe. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage and diverse populations that existed before the onset of modernization. The Sakai people, like many indigenous communities, have faced numerous challenges in preserving their traditions and way of life. Today, efforts are being made to promote their culture and ensure their continued existence. This photograph not only provides a glimpse into the past but also serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the human spirit.
