EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite chromolithograph depicts the enchanting Purple-stained Laelia Orchid, Cattleya purpurata, also known as Laelia purpurata. The illustration is taken from Edward Stephan's Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse, published by Frederick Warne in London in 1896. The illustration was based on an original painting by the renowned Dutch botanical artist, B. Herincq. The Purple-stained Laelia Orchid is a captivating variety, characterized by its vibrant purple stains on the edges of its white petals. The intricate details of the orchid's delicate structure are beautifully rendered in this hand-colored copperplate engraving. The image also features several other flowers in the same illustration, including a carnation, a dianthus, and a caryophyllus, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal. The botanical illustration is reminiscent of the florilegia, or flower books, that were popular during the 17th century. These books were often commissioned by wealthy patrons and nurserymen to document and showcase the latest and most exotic plant discoveries. The illustration is accompanied by the Latin names of the flowers, including the scientific name of the Purple-stained Laelia Orchid, Cattleya purpurata. The painting is attributed to Emanuel Sweert, a Flemish painter, and is believed to have been produced in Frankfurt. The illustration is a testament to the artistry and dedication of the botanical illustrators of the time, who meticulously documented the natural world for future generations to appreciate and study.
