EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph from the 1930s, a young Princess Margaret, dressed in a stylish coat and hat, is seen playfully interacting with a rather disgruntled-looking chimpanzee. The scene unfolds at the London Zoo, where the future queen of England visited as a child, bringing joy and wonderment to her young life. The image captures the innocence and curiosity of childhood, as the princess reaches out to touch the chimp's hand, while the animal gazes back with a mischievous expression. The chimpanzee, a close relative to humans, was a popular attraction at the zoo during that era, and Princess Margaret's visit was a testament to the fascination and connection people had with these fascinating primates. The photograph, taken by the renowned Illustrated London News Ltd, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when royal children were allowed to experience the simple joys of childhood, free from the constraints of their future roles. The 1930s were a period of significant change, with the world on the brink of war, and yet, moments like this one, show that even in the midst of uncertainty, there were still opportunities for joy and connection. The image of Princess Margaret and the chimpanzee serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between humans and animals, and the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations to explore and learn from. This photograph, now available as a print from Mary Evans Prints Online, is a treasured piece of history, offering a glimpse into the life of a young princess and the world she inhabited, long before she became a queen.
