EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph showcases a captivating array of new begonia varieties, meticulously raised by the renowned Forgeot Co. of Paris during the late 19th century. The Begonia species depicted in this exquisite illustration, created by the skilled hand of Pieter de Pannemaeker for Jean Lindens' Illustration Horticole in Brussels, showcases the company's dedication to botanical discovery and innovation. The Begonia tubereux family, known for their tuberous roots, is particularly well-represented in this vibrant and diverse collection. Each begonia cultivar boasts unique and captivating blooms, with petals ranging from rich reds and velvety purples to delicate pinks and soft whites. Some varieties exhibit intricate patterns and ruffles, while others boast a more simple, yet elegant, appearance. The tropical and exotic allure of these begonias was a source of fascination for horticulturists and plant enthusiasts during this era. The meticulous cultivation techniques employed by Forgeot Co. allowed these begonias to thrive, bringing their exotic beauty to the European market. This chromolithograph, a popular method of reproducing detailed illustrations during the late 1800s, masterfully captures the essence of each begonia variety. The intricate details of the petals, leaves, and stems are rendered in rich, vibrant colors, making this an essential addition to any botanical collection. As a testament to the enduring appeal of these begonias, many of the varieties featured in this illustration are still cultivated and admired today. This image serves as a reminder of the rich history of plant exploration and the continued importance of preserving and celebrating the natural world.
