EDITORS COMMENTS
Leonora Dori Galigai, wife of Concino Concini, is depicted in this handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, based on a miniature in oils. Born in 1571, Leonora was the wife of the infamous Italian military leader, Concino Concini, who rose to power under the reign of Marie de' Medici, Queen of France, in the late 16th century. Concini was known for his political cunning and was rumored to have dabbled in the dark arts, including exorcism and witchcraft. Leonora is shown wearing her hair loose under a simple white bonnet, adorned with a velvet dress featuring a lace collar and cuffs. The dress is accessorized with a black apron, which covers a red embroidered petticoat. The contrast between the rich red and the somber black creates a striking visual effect. Despite the controversial reputation of her husband, Leonora is portrayed with a serene expression and an air of refinement. Her attire is elegant and fashionable for the time, reflecting the opulence of the French court. However, the engraving also hints at the underlying tension and intrigue that surrounded the Concinis, with Leonora's dark, intense gaze and the ominous clouds in the background. This intriguing image of Leonora Dori Galigai offers a glimpse into the complex world of the French court during the late Renaissance, where power, politics, and the supernatural intertwined in unexpected ways.
