EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures the young and ambitious face of Jackie Coogan, taken in October 1921 when he was just six years old. At this point in his career, Coogan had already made a name for himself as a child actor in the silent film industry, having been discovered by none other than Charlie Chaplin. The precocious Coogan was earning an impressive $10,000 a year and dreamed of the day when he would star alongside his idol, Mary Pickford, as his leading lady. Born on October 25, 1914, in Los Angeles, California, Coogan's acting talent was evident from an early age. He began his acting career in vaudeville before making his film debut in 1919 in the short comedy "The Haunted House." Over the next few years, he appeared in numerous films, often playing mischievous or comic roles. Despite his success, Coogan had lofty goals. He aspired to retire from acting at the age of fifteen, believing that he would have made enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life. However, fate had other plans, and Coogan continued to act well into adulthood, becoming a successful businessman and entrepreneur in later life. This image of Coogan, with his earnest expression and serious gaze, captures the determination and ambition of a young actor on the rise. The photograph is a reminder of the early days of Hollywood and the remarkable careers of its child stars, who captivated audiences and left lasting legacies in the world of entertainment.
