EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Chinese Yam or Cinnamon-Vine, Dioscorea polystachya This stunning hand-colored steel engraving showcases the intricate details of the Chinese Yam or Cinnamon-Vine, Dioscorea polystachya. The botanical illustration was originally created by Edouard Maubert and later meticulously engraved by Oudet for the renowned horticultural publication, "La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres," published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs between 1864 and 1871. Dioscorea polystachya, also known as Chinese Yam, Cinnamon Vine, or Nagaimo, is a tuberous vine native to Southeast Asia. The plant is characterized by its long, slender tubers, which can grow up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) in length. The tubers have a smooth, brownish-yellow surface and a white, fibrous interior. The Chinese Yam is an essential food source in many Asian countries, particularly in China, Japan, and the Philippines. The tubers are used in various dishes, including soups, stews, and desserts. In Japan, they are commonly used in the preparation of "nagaimo no monjayaki," a popular savory pancake. The Cinnamon-Vine derives its name from the cinnamon-like aroma of its rhizomes. The plant is also known for its medicinal properties, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is used to treat various ailments, including digestive issues and arthritis. This beautiful engraving captures the intricate details of the Chinese Yam or Cinnamon-Vine, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the plant kingdom during the late 19th century.
