EDITORS COMMENTS
This cartoon print, titled "The Gaiety Ghost - I'll follow thee! (No pride about Terry)" by Edward O'Connor Terry, offers a humorous glimpse into the world of late Victorian theatre. The image features Terry, an acclaimed actor and theatre proprietor, being pursued by the infamous Gaiety Theatre Ghost. Terry, dressed in his theatrical attire, looks back over his shoulder with a mixture of amusement and resignation as the ghost, depicted as a mischievous figure with a lantern, continues its relentless pursuit. The Gaiety Theatre in London, where this theatrical escapade unfolded, was known for its innovative productions and lively atmosphere. Terry, who had previously served as the theatre's manager, was a popular figure in the London theatrical scene. This print, created in January 1885 during the 1880s, likely refers to an entr'acte or interlude between acts, when the audience would be entertained with music, comedy, or other performances. The cartoon's title, "No pride about Terry," suggests that Terry took the ghostly pursuit in good humor, perhaps even enjoying the added excitement it brought to the theatre. The image captures the spirit of the era's theatre culture, where the line between reality and performance was often blurred, and theatregoers could expect the unexpected. This charming print is a testament to the enduring allure of the Victorian theatre and the playful antics that often accompanied its lively productions.
