EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing moth, Noctua fimbriata. The moth, with its intricately patterned wings, is shown in flight against a backdrop of a moonlit landscape. The Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing is a large moth native to Europe and Asia, with a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. The moth's forewings are a rich yellow-brown color with broad, dark borders, while the hindwings are a paler yellow with distinct black markings. The engraving is based on a natural observation and was created by the skilled hands of Johann Carl Bock, after the original work of Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers. Espers was a renowned naturalist and entomologist who dedicated his life to documenting the natural world, particularly the Lepidoptera, or butterflies and moths. The meticulous detail in this engraving is a testament to the importance placed on accurate scientific documentation during the Enlightenment era. The Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing undergoes complete metamorphosis, transforming from a caterpillar to a pupa, and finally to an adult moth. The caterpillar feeds on a variety of plants, including nettles and willows, while the adult moth feeds on nectar and sap. The moth's lifespan is relatively short, with adults living for only a few weeks during which they mate and lay their eggs. This beautiful work of art is a reminder of the rich natural history of the past and the importance of documenting the natural world for future generations.
