EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph print, titled "Nasturtium," is a beautiful example of the Art Nouveau design aesthetic, showcasing the natural beauty of the Nasturtium plant in a captivating and intricate manner. Created by renowned French artist Eugène Grasset in 1897, this piece is taken from his collection "Plants and Their Application to Ornament." The print is a lithograph, a technique that allowed Grasset to achieve a wide range of tonal values and fine details. The image of the Nasturtium is overlaid with intricate Art Nouveau patterns, reminiscent of flowing vines and delicate filigree. These patterns are not just decorative, but rather an integral part of the design, seamlessly merging the plant and its surrounding ornamentation. The print was further enhanced through pochoir (stencil) handcoloring, a labor-intensive process that added depth and vibrancy to the image. Each color was applied by hand, layer by layer, resulting in a rich and textured final product. The Nasturtium print was likely intended for use as a border or wallpaper design, reflecting the Art Nouveau obsession with organic forms and the integration of nature into daily life. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors would have made for a striking and eye-catching addition to any interior space. Eugène Grasset was a leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement, known for his innovative designs and integration of natural forms into ornamentation. This Nasturtium print is a testament to his artistic vision and the enduring appeal of the Art Nouveau style.
