EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Namaqua Dove, Oena capensis, a native bird species of the arid regions of southwestern Africa. The image was created by the renowned Scottish engraver William Lizars, based on an illustration by the celebrated English artist Edward Lear. The engraving is taken from Prideaux John Selby's seminal work, "Pigeons in Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ornithology," published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1835. The Namaqua Dove, also known as the Namaqua Sandgrouse or Capeturtle Dove, is a small, ground-dwelling bird with distinctive markings. The species is characterized by its sandy-colored plumage, which provides excellent camouflage in its desert habitat. The Namaqua Dove is an omnivore, feeding on seeds, fruits, and insects. It is also known for its unique behavior of carrying water to its young in its esophagus, which it regurgitates as a milky substance. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time. The meticulous hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history prints. The Namaqua Dove remains an important species in the study of ornithology and continues to fascinate researchers and bird enthusiasts alike with its unique adaptations to its desert environment.
