EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas portrait captures the elegance and grace of Infanta Maria Luisa Fernanda de Borbón (1832-1897), the daughter of Ferdinand VII of Spain. Painted by the renowned German artist Franz Xavier Winterhalter (1805-1873) in the winter of 1862, this portrait was completed during Maria Luisa Fernanda's marriage to Antonio Maria Luis de Orleans, Duke of Montpensier. The painting showcases the Infanta's refined beauty, with her dark, expressive eyes and delicate features. The rich colors and intricate details of her elaborate gown and jewels add to the opulence of the piece. The portrait was likely commissioned to celebrate Maria Luisa Fernanda's marriage, which took place in 1857. At the time, she was just 25 years old, and the marriage was a significant political alliance, as the Duke of Montpensier was a member of the French House of Bourbon. The painting is a testament to the artistic and cultural connections between Spain and France during the 19th century. It is also a reflection of the grandeur and wealth of the Spanish royal family during this period. The portrait was originally housed in the Royal Palace of Madrid but is now on display at the Museums of Fine Arts of Granada in Andalusia, Spain. Maria Luisa Fernanda's portrait is often compared to that of her sister, Isabella II of Spain, who was also painted by Winterhalter in 1830 and 1843. The two portraits showcase the artist's mastery of capturing the unique beauty and personality of each subject. This portrait of Maria Luisa Fernanda remains an enduring symbol of the elegance and sophistication of the Spanish royal family during the 19th century.
