EDITORS COMMENTS
This oval photograph captures the enigmatic and brilliant mind of Percival Lowell, an American astronomer who left an indelible mark on the scientific world. Born on March 13, 1855, in Boston, Massachusetts, Lowell was known for his balding head, framed by a fringe of white and grey hair. His piercing eyes, visible beneath thick-rimmed glasses, seem to convey a deep sense of concentration and intellectual curiosity. Lowell's contributions to astronomy were significant, particularly in the area of Mars exploration. In 1895, he founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he dedicated himself to the study of Mars, believing it to harbor canals and intelligent life. Although his theories were later disproven, Lowell's work paved the way for future Mars exploration and the development of more sophisticated telescopes and imaging technology. This photograph, taken in 1916, captures Lowell in the prime of his later years. Dressed in a formal suit and tie, he exudes an air of authority and sophistication. The historical significance of this image is further emphasized by its provenance from the Mary Evans Picture Library, a renowned archive of historical photographs. Lowell's legacy extends beyond Mars exploration, as he was also a prolific writer and advocate for the use of observational data in scientific research. His books, including "Mars and Its Canals" and "Mars as the Abode of Life," continue to be studied and admired by astronomers and history buffs alike. This photograph is not only a testament to Lowell's intellectual prowess but also a reminder of the enduring allure of the cosmos and the human desire to explore its mysteries.
