EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph captures the Mile End fire station, located at Frimley Street in the East End of London, which was built by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in 1866. The creation of the London County Council (LCC) in 1889 led to the transfer of the fire station from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade to the LCC-London Fire Brigade. The Victorian-era building, with its arched entrance and archway, was designed for a horse-drawn steamer and is seen here with a 50ft wheeled escape ladder stored by the side. The station served the community until 1902 when a new Mile End fire station was erected in Mile End Road. The image provides a glimpse into the history of firefighting in London during the late 1800s, showcasing the dedication and commitment of the fire brigade to protect the people and buildings of the city. The photograph, taken in the 1890s, is a testament to the bravery and resilience of the firefighters who operated from this station, using horse-drawn equipment to respond to emergencies and save lives."
