EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a vintage fire engine from the London Fire Brigade's (LFB) past is seen making a visit to Clapham fire station in the 1990s. The engine, which is a former Middlesex Fire Brigade pump escape, was absorbed into the enlarged London Fire Brigade in 1965 with the creation of the Greater London Council. This Dennis dual-purpose appliance was lovingly restored by dedicated fire service enthusiasts and was used at displays and open days to showcase the rich history of firefighting in London. The engine, which is adorned with its distinctive red and grey livery, is shown in this image with its impressive 50-foot escape ladder slipped from the rear. The ladder, an essential piece of equipment for rescuing people from height, adds to the vehicle's imposing presence on the quiet Clapham street. The image transports us back to the 1990s and the nostalgic era of the 90s, a time when such vintage appliances were still in use and firefighting was a more hands-on, community-focused profession. The London Fire Brigade's heritage is an important part of the city's history, and the restoration and preservation of such vehicles is a testament to the dedication and passion of fire service enthusiasts. This photograph captures a moment in time, a snapshot of history that showcases the proud tradition of firefighting in London and the vital role that these vehicles played in keeping the city safe.
