LCC-LFB Clerkenwell Emergency Tender

Clerkenwells emergency tender with its fire crew in Proto breathing apparatus. Clerkenwell fire station was built in 1870. By 1919 self contained firefighting breathing apparatus sets were becoming available and the London Fire Brigade introduced several special tenders to provide a rapid response to serious fires where deep penetration into smoke was required. Here, Clerkenwells breathing apparatus tender is shown with its crew and some of its specialist equipment, including an early petrol lighting generator. The Proto one-hour breathing apparatus sets used pure oxygen -- note the spare oxygen cylinders on the running board

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Clerkenwell Fire Station's Emergency Tender and its brave fire crew in the 1920s, showcasing their advanced Proto breathing apparatus. Established in 1870, Clerkenwell Fire Station was one of the oldest in London Fire Brigade's (LFB) network. By the post-World War I era, self-contained firefighting breathing apparatus sets had become available, revolutionizing firefighting capabilities. In this image, the Clerkenwell breathing apparatus tender is depicted with its crew, ready for action. The tender, an essential appliance for responding to serious fires requiring deep penetration into smoke, is adorned with the latest Proto one-hour breathing apparatus sets. These sets were revolutionary as they utilized pure oxygen, allowing firefighters to work effectively in dense smoke conditions for extended periods. The crew is seen wearing their protective gear, with spare oxygen cylinders placed on the running board for easy access. The tender is also equipped with an early petrol lighting generator, providing essential illumination in the darkest of environments. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the early days of specialized firefighting equipment and the dedication of the LFB crews during the 1920s. The sepia tone adds to the nostalgic atmosphere, transporting us back in time to an era when firefighters' courage and resourcefulness were essential in saving lives and protecting property. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of the London Fire Brigade and the evolution of firefighting techniques.
