EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in November 1916, King Nikola I of Montenegro (1841-1921) is seen in the company of General Sir Edmund Allenby (1861-1936) in the quaint village of Bryas, now known as Brias, located north of St Pol in France. King Nikola, who ruled Montenegro from 1910 to 1918, was in exile during World War I. He had led his small Balkan nation into war against the Central Powers in 1914, but was ultimately forced to withdraw his troops due to military defeats and the harsh winter conditions. King Nikola and his government then sought refuge in France, where they remained until the end of the war. General Sir Edmund Allenby, a British Army officer, was a prominent military figure during World War I. He had been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in 1917 and went on to lead the successful offensive in Palestine, which culminated in the capture of Jerusalem in December 1917. The meeting between King Nikola and General Allenby in Bryas was likely a significant moment in Montenegrin history. The Montenegrin army had fought alongside the British and French forces during the war, and this encounter may have been an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss military strategy or seek support for Montenegro's post-war aspirations. The photograph captures a moment of historical significance, with two important figures from the Great War coming together in a quiet French village. The image is a poignant reminder of the complex web of alliances and relationships that shaped the course of the war and the political landscape of Europe in the early 20th century.
