EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1636-1699), a renowned French artist and director of the Academie des Arts du Dessin in Rouen. Descamps was a significant figure in the art world of 17th century France, known for his exceptional skills in drawing and painting. Born in Rouen, Descamps studied under the tutelage of Jacques Le Lieur, a local artist, before traveling to Paris to further his education. He later returned to Rouen, where he became a professor at the Academie des Arts du Dessin in 1666. Descamps' dedication to the academy was unwavering, and he eventually succeeded Jean-Baptiste Lepautre as its director in 1682. Descamps' artistic style was characterized by his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the subtle nuances of light and shadow. His works often depicted religious and mythological themes, as well as portraits and landscapes. One of his most famous pieces, "The Adoration of the Shepherds," can be found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. As the director of the Academie des Arts du Dessin, Descamps played a crucial role in promoting the arts in Rouen and fostering the next generation of artists. He organized exhibitions, competitions, and workshops, and his students included some of the most prominent artists of the time, such as Pierre-Antoine Manneaux and Jean-Baptiste Greuze. This print serves as a testament to Descamps' enduring legacy as a French artist and educator, and a reminder of the vital role that academies played in the development of the arts during the 17th century.
