In this evocative photograph, the remnants of Ikarus IK-2 biplanes stand proudly on the tarmac, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Yugoslavian Air Force during the darkest days of World War II. The IK-2, a vintage biplane designed and built in the 1920s, was the backbone of the Yugoslavian aviation industry before the war. However, as the Axis powers invaded in 1941, these elderly aircraft were no match for the advanced fighter planes of the German Luftwaffe. Despite the odds, the Yugoslavian pilots continued to fly their IK-2s with courage and determination, conducting daring raids against enemy supply lines and ground troops. Their bravery bought precious time for the retreating Yugoslavian army and civilians, allowing them to escape to the mountains and forests, where they could regroup and plan their resistance.
