At the time, Dakar was the administrative center of French West Africa, a vast colonial territory encompassing present-day Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Chad. The image shows a crowd of people gathered outside the hospital, many of them carrying sick family members or friends on makeshift stretchers.
