EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the moment of anticipation as H.M.S Neptune, the first of the Royal Navy's super-Dreadnought battleships, prepares for launching at Portsmouth Royal Dockyard in 1909. The Neptune, a technological marvel of her time, marked a significant shift in naval warfare with her advanced armament and armor plating. As the flagship of the First Fleet, H.M.S Neptune played a pivotal role in the early years of the First World War. She was relieved as fleet flagship in 1914 and joined the First Battle Squadron. At the outbreak of war, the First Fleet transformed into the Grand Fleet, with H.M.S Neptune present at the historic Battle of Jutland in 1916. Despite her valiant service, the Neptune was quickly transferred to the reserve fleet after the war and ultimately sold for scrap in 1922. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the Neptune's place in naval history, as one of the pioneering vessels of the Dreadnought class that revolutionized battleship design and set the stage for the naval battles of the First World War."
