EDITORS COMMENTS
Emperors and Legends: The Great Wall of China in Ancient Times This image brings us back to the ancient world of China during the Fourth Tsin Dynasty, around 237 BC. The Great Wall of China, a marvel of human engineering and a testament to the rich history of China, is depicted in this photograph, taken from an 1840 print by Allom, held at Mary Evans Picture Library. The Great Wall, built by Emperor Chi-Hoang-Ti, the first universal monarch of China, stands as a symbol of the power and grandeur of the Chinese empire. Chi-Hoang-Ti, also known as Emperor Qin Shi Huang, was the first emperor of a unified China, having conquered the various warring states and established the Qin Dynasty. The Great Wall, stretching over 13,000 miles, was built primarily to protect China from invasions by nomadic tribes from the north. The construction of the wall began in 221 BC and took over 20 years to complete. It was not a continuous wall, but rather a series of walls and fortifications, with watchtowers, troop barracks, and signal systems, all designed to provide early warning of enemy attacks. This photograph, taken from an 1840 print, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine the scene as it might have appeared during the time of Emperor Chi-Hoang-Ti. The rugged terrain, the winding wall, and the vast expanse of land beyond, all speak to the immense effort and determination that went into building this legendary structure. The Great Wall of China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see destination for travelers from around the world, continues to inspire awe and wonder, reminding us of the rich history and cultural heritage of China.
