EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcolored copperplate print depicts Geoffrey V, Count of Anjou (1113-1151), a prominent figure in the medieval Plantagenet dynasty. The image, drawn and engraved by Leopold Massard for the publication "French Costumes from King Clovis to Our Days," offers a captivating glimpse into the fashion and iconography of the Middle Ages. Geoffrey V is depicted wearing a Phrygian helmet, a distinctive headpiece with a tall, conical crown and a crest adorned with a lion, the symbol of the Counts of Anjou. He wears a long, flowing cape, fastened at the shoulder with a brooch, and a tunic with a fitted bodice and wide, flowing sleeves. The tunic is adorned with intricate heraldic designs, including the Plantagenet lions. In his right hand, Geoffrey holds a sword, while in his left, he clutches a buckler shield. The shield bears the same heraldic designs as his tunic, further emphasizing his status and lineage. The attention to detail in the engraving is remarkable, from the intricate patterns on the helmet and the textured fabric of the tunic, to the realistic rendering of the lion crest and the lifelike expression on the count's face. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and iconography of the medieval period, as well as the rich history of the Plantagenet dynasty. The meticulous craftsmanship of the print, coupled with the historical significance of its subject, makes it a valuable addition to any collection of medieval art or historical costumes.
