Garfield's military career began in the mid-1830s when he joined the United States Army as a volunteer officer during the Seminole Wars. He later fought in the Mexican-American War, where he was wounded twice and rose to the rank of Major General. Garfield's political career commenced in 1852 when he was elected to the Ohio State Senate. He went on to serve in the House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, and was later elected to the Senate in 1880. In 1880, the Republican Party, seeking a candidate to challenge the Democratic incumbent, Rutherford B. Hayes, turned to Garfield, who had gained a reputation as a dedicated public servant and a man of integrity. The photograph shows Garfield in his presidential uniform, with a serious expression that bespeaks the weight of responsibility he bore. The image is a testament to his military and political achievements, as well as his unwavering commitment to the United States.
