The Gay Parisienne
EDITORS COMMENTS
by George Dance: A Delightful Comedy of Errors from the Late Victorian Era Step into the world of "The Gay Parisienne," a charming comedy play written by George Dance and featuring music by Ernest Vousden. First performed at the Theatre Royal in Northampton on October 1, 1894, this theatrical gem was later prepared for touring to Fulham in 1899, as evidenced by this promotional cut-out flyer. The story revolves around the character of Mr. Honeycomb, a seemingly decorous and respectable Englishman. However, when he travels abroad, particularly to Paris, his true nature unfurls, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings. Mlle. Julie Bon-Bon of Paris sues Honeycomb for breach of promise, prompting him to flee to Switzerland in fear of his wife's wrath. Reportedly drowned, Honeycomb's supposed widow, accompanied by her friend, Major Fossdyke, sets out to claim his remains. Unbeknownst to them, Honeycomb is very much alive and, in a clever twist, turns the tables on them. This delightful comedy, filled with laughter and light-hearted mischief, is a testament to the popular entertainment of the late Victorian era. The play, with its witty dialogue and engaging characters, is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of theatre and pantomime, or simply looking for a delightful escape into the past. Join Mr. Honeycomb on his unforgettable journey to Paris and beyond, as he navigates the complexities of love, marriage, and the allure of the continent. This cut-out flyer, showcasing the play's title, "The Gay Parisienne," and the names of its creators, offers a glimpse into the rich theatrical history of the late 19th century.
