EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolour painting, created by Sydney Parkinson during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1771, captures the enchanting beauty of the Tahitian gardenia (Gardenia taitensis). The illustration, annotated as "Gardenia florida," is a testament to the natural wonders discovered during this historic journey. The Tahitian gardenia is a member of the Rubiaceae family, which is the largest family of flowering plants, and is classified as an eudicot, angiosperm, and dicotyledon. This long-lived, evergreen shrub is native to the Pacific Islands and is known for its fragrant, white flowers and glossy, green leaves. The painting, made during the voyage of the Endeavour, showcases the intricate details of the gardenia's flower, which is composed of numerous petals arranged in a symmetrical pattern, and its distinctive, elongated leaves. The illustration also reveals the plant's connection to the Gentianales order, which includes the gentians, loganiaceae, and rubiaceae. As a member of the Asterid clade, the Tahitian gardenia is part of a large and diverse group of flowering plants that includes sunflowers, daisies, and the potato. This watercolour painting, created over 250 years ago, remains a valuable record of the natural history of the Pacific Islands and the remarkable discoveries made during Captain Cook's groundbreaking voyage.
