EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of a Fula Woman from Senegal, West Africa, during the circa 1920s. The Fula people, also known as the Fulbe, Hause, Wolof, Pel, or Foulah, are a large ethnic group spread across West Africa. This woman's distinctive traditional ornamentation and hairstyle reflect her rich cultural heritage. The Fula woman is adorned with an intricately designed headpiece, which is a hallmark of her ethnicity. The headwear, made of fabric and beads, is shaped like a large, flat disk, with a central hole for the forehead. It is often decorated with intricate patterns and colorful beads. Her hair is styled in long, braided strands, adorned with silver coins and amber beads. The coins and beads are attached to the braids with threads, creating a remarkable effect. The large, single-bead necklace she wears adds to her regal appearance. Hooped earrings, made of metal or beads, hang from her earlobes, completing her traditional look. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Fula people and their unique traditions, which have been passed down through generations.
