EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, taken from the Thomas Bankes Bible, published in 1787, depicts the poignant first meeting between Joseph and his long-lost brothers in Egypt. The Old Testament narrative in Genesis 42:6 describes the emotional reunion, which occurred after Joseph's brothers came to Egypt to buy grain during a famine. Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers and had risen to become a powerful Egyptian leader, recognized them but chose to conceal his identity. In this painting, we see Joseph, dressed in Egyptian attire and seated on a raised platform, surrounded by his brothers who have come before him in humility and reverence. Joseph's brothers are depicted with various expressions of surprise, fear, and awe. The eldest brother, Judah, is shown kneeling before his brother, perhaps in submission or pleading for mercy. The brothers' clothing and the ornate Egyptian setting further emphasize the cultural divide between them and their adopted leader. The intricately detailed painting, with its rich colors and evocative expressions, beautifully captures the complex emotions and familial dynamics of this biblical tale.
