EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Ethel Irving in the role of Lolette in Dame Nature, a production of the play La Femme Nue by Henri Bataille. The image was taken at the Renaissance Theatre in Paris on February 22, 1908, during the initial staging of the play. Ethel, the daughter of the renowned actor Henry Irving, later brought the production to London, where it premiered at the Garrick Theatre on January 20, 1910, and later transferred to Terry's Theatre on May 21, 1910. In this photograph, Ethel is seen gracefully leaning back in an upholstered chair, her back to the audience. The velvet chair, trimmed with fur, adds an air of luxury and sophistication to the scene. Ethel's elegant Edwardian attire, with its flowing skirt and high collar, accentuates her feminine figure. Her expression is one of quiet contemplation, adding to the mysterious allure of the character of Lolette. The play Dame Nature, also known as La Femme Nue, was a controversial production for its time, exploring themes of nudity and sensuality on the stage. Ethel's portrayal of Lolette was praised for her ability to convey the character's complexity and depth, making it a memorable performance in her career. This photograph, taken by Daily Mirror Studios, is a testament to Ethel Irving's talent and the impact she made on the stage during the early 20th century.
