EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children) published in Weimar in 1798, showcases a collection of endangered macaque, douc, saki, and roloway monkeys. The engraving features six distinct primate species, each with unique characteristics that highlight their beauty and vulnerability. In the center, the Lion-tailed Macaque, Macaca silenus, with its distinctive lion-like mane, is shown endangered. To its left, the Greater Spot-nosed Monkey, Cercopithecus nictitans, with its large, expressive eyes and prominent nose spots, is also depicted as endangered. Moving to the right, the Red-shanked Douc, Pygathrix nemaeus, with its vibrant red legs and long, bushy tail, is another endangered species featured. Next to it is the White-faced Saki, Pithecia pithecia, with its striking white face and long, prehensile tail. Finally, the Roloway Monkey, Cercopithecus roloway, with its distinctive white eyebrows and red-brown fur, is shown as another endangered primate. These primates, with their diverse appearances and intriguing features, serve as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect them from extinction. This historical illustration, handcolored and meticulously engraved, offers a glimpse into the natural world of the past and underscores the ongoing need to preserve the world's biodiversity for future generations.
