EDITORS COMMENTS
Courtesy of the estate of Mrs J.C.Robinson/Pollinger Ltd/Mary Evans Picture Library Title: The Egg Test For Brakes - A Humorous Illustration by W. Heath Robinson This delightful illustration by the renowned British humourist, W. Heath Robinson, captures the essence of early automobile innovation and the importance of testing safety features, specifically the braking system. In the image, a determined gentleman, dressed in period attire, conducts an unconventional yet ingenious test on a hillside. He sits in the driver's seat of a quaint, old-fashioned car, while his assistant, also dressed in period clothing, stands by with an egg in hand. The driver, with a focused expression, applies the brakes, causing the vehicle to come to a halt. The assistant, watching intently, cracks the egg onto the ground, revealing its intactness as a sign of successful braking. The humour in this illustration lies in the unusual method of testing the brakes, which adds a touch of whimsy to the otherwise serious subject matter. The setting, with its picturesque hillside and quaint car, transports us back in time to an era when automobiles were still a novelty, and safety testing was a critical aspect of their development. The use of an egg as a test subject adds an element of charm and simplicity to the process, making it a memorable and entertaining depiction of early automobile history. In conclusion, this charming illustration by W. Heath Robinson not only showcases the importance of testing safety features in automobiles but also highlights the inventive spirit and humour of the early 20th century.
