EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning image of a Bobolink, Dolichonyx oryzivorus, is taken from Plate 54 of John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America" (1827-30). The plate was produced in the original double elephant folio size, measuring an impressive 39 1/2 inches by 29 inches. The meticulous detail in this hand-coloured aquatint engraving is a testament to the extraordinary skill of the engraver, R. Havell (& Son), and the colorist, whose artistry brings the vibrant plumage of the Bobolink to life. The Bobolink is a passerine bird belonging to the Icteridae family, known for its distinctive black and yellow coloration. In this illustration, the bird is perched gracefully on a slender branch of an Acer maple tree, its beak tucked neatly under its wing. The maple, an angiosperm, is a flowering plant from the order Sapindales, and a member of the Eudicot clade, Magnoliophyta. The botanical name for the maple tree is Acer, derived from the Greek word for "sharp," likely referring to the sharp points on the leaves. The Bobolink is often found in grasslands and wetlands, and is known to feed on a variety of seeds, insects, and other invertebrates. The scientific name, Dolichonyx oryzivorus, translates to "long-tailed rice-eater," reflecting the bird's long tail and preference for rice fields as a habitat. Audubon's "Birds of America" is considered a masterpiece of natural history illustration, showcasing the natural world with unparalleled accuracy and beauty. This image of the Bobolink, with its intricate detail and lifelike portrayal, is a testament to Audubon's dedication to capturing the essence of each species he depicted.
