EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration showcases the majestic Diplodocus, one of the longest-known dinosaurs, weighing around 20 tonnes and stretching up to an impressive 26 metres in length. A herbivorous giant of the Upper Jurassic period, approximately 155 to 145 million years ago, Diplodocus is a striking representative of the Dinosauria, a subclass of the Archosauria, the ancient lineage of reptiles that includes both dinosaurs and their close relatives. The Diplodocus, a member of the Diplodocidae family and the Diplodocinae subfamily, is characterized by its long, double-beamed tail, which it likely used for balance and support during movement. Its elongated neck and body were adapted for reaching high branches in its mesozoic habitat, allowing it to graze on foliage other dinosaurs could not reach. This illustration, created by the talented Neave Parker, transports us back to a day in the late Cretaceous period, a time of double-daylight and daytime temperatures that would have allowed the Diplodocus to make the most of its herbivorous diet. The Diplodocus, along with other Diplodocids, Diplodocidae, Diplodocinae, and Diplodocoidea, are part of the larger Diplodocidae clade, which includes other long-necked, long-tailed sauropods. As we admire the intricate details and vibrant colours of this illustration, we are reminded of the rich history and diversity of life that once thrived on our planet. The Diplodocus, a true testament to the wonders of the natural world, continues to inspire awe and fascination in generations to come.
